Day 2 of Yankton 2021 World Archery Championships
YANKTON, USA – Today was the second day of competition at the World Archery Championships, which saw team matches kick off across both compound and recurve divisions.
The compound men’s team were the first Canadians shooting today. Jamie Brehaut, Andrew Fagan, and Christopher Perkins faced the 19th-ranked Portuguese team, where they lost by one point (231-230). The two teams were separated by no more than 4 points each end and shot three bullseyes in the final end to close the gap to 1 point.
The men’s recurve team took an early lead against India, winning the first two ends to go up 4-0. However, they were unable to convert in the third and fourth ends, and India was able to come back and force a tie break. Unfortunately, Canada lost the tie break and the men’s recurve team will not advance in the competition.
The women’s recurve team lost the first two ends to go down 0-4 to Brazil before rallying with a bit of a comeback to force a tie breaker, which they ultimately lost. The score not only came down to a tie breaker, but to the final arrow. The final score was 5-4 in favour of the Brazilian team.
“Against a strong Brazilian team today, we held our own really well; it was a tight match going all the way to a shootout,” comments Stephanie Barrett, member of the women’s recurve team. “Our communication and support of each other was outstanding; we were showing a solid formation and hinting at what next season will bring.”
While none of the teams who shot matches today will advance, all the athletes will now focus on their individual matches, which start tomorrow, September 23, at 10:15 EDT.
