Ellis, 19, and Beaumont, 20, were competing in men’s and women’s junior compound, respectively, while Canada was also represented in the 1956 Winter Olympics host city by Cory Smandych of Calgary, Brendan von Richter of Port Moody, B.C., and Calgary’s Mark Nasi, all in the men’s compound tournament.

In his first event as a member of the national team, Ellis advanced to the elimination stage as the 13th seed thanks to a 769 qualification score. After earning a bye in the first ranking round, he defeated 16th-seeded Luis Fernando Vives Ledezma of Mexico 98-94, before falling to Ireland’s eighth seed Daniel Foley, by 94-96, in the third round.

Timo Bega of Luxembourg went on to win gold, ahead of Connor Sears of the United States and Jesse Sut of host Italy.

Beaumont, returning to the world championships after finishing ninth in 2016, also advanced as the 13th seed after shooting 698 in qualification. In her only elimination match, in the third round, she dropped an 88-93 decision to eighth-seeded Cassidy Cox of the United States, who eventually captured silver.

Rounding out the women’s junior compound podium were champion Sara Ret of Italy and bronze medallist Savannah Vanderwier of the USA.

In men’s compound, none of the three Canucks were able to make it past the qualification stage in a field of 46 participants. Smandych finished 25th after shooting 792, while von Richter (773) and Nasi (699) ended up in 35th and 44th position, respectively.

Mike Schloesser of the Netherlands won the competition, with Nico Wiener of Austria and Steve Anderson of the USA taking silver and bronze.

“I am very happy with the team’s results. They have gained more international experience and did well with the new format,” said Sean McKenty, Archery Canada’s Compound Target and Field Coordinator. “I look forward to seeing them on the future World Field teams.”

“I am so proud of how professionally Team Canada represented the country both on and off the field,” added Team Manager Shelley Wong, who accompanied the Canadian contingent in Italy. “The experience of international competition will inspire their commitment to excellence.”
