MEDIA RELEASE – Response to Recent Pan American Games Team Selection Issues

Saturday, June 13, 2015 – Ottawa

In response to recent Pan American Games team selection issues, Archery Canada remains committed to supporting its athletes as Canada gets ready to welcome the Pan American countries to Toronto next month. It is Archery Canada’s intent to focus its attention on enabling optimal performance of its archers throughout this summer’s important competitions, including the Pan / Para American Games and World Championships.

Archery Canada’s selection decisions are based on sound policy and process. Through this process, and after receiving legal counsel, Archery Canada recognized a challenge in that it had not provided sufficient notice regarding the change in its stated performance objectives for the Pan American Games. As a result, Archery Canada retained its original performance objectives and selected Kateri Vrakking to the team.

“Our executive director has reached out to Kateri earlier today and expressed our sincere desire to work together. We will now be focusing on providing Kateri and her teammates with the support they need to achieve their performance objectives this summer,” shared Allan Wills, president of Archery Canada.

Executive Director, Scott Ogilvie also highlighted the importance of building towards the future and said “Our strategic direction remains unchanged as we are building a system that can deliver podium performances at the Olympic and Paralympic levels. Archery Canada will leverage this incident to improve upon its communication with its athletes and to ensure a sound understanding by its members of its selection policies and performance objectives.”
