Team Canada Reflects on Dubai Experience and Looks Ahead to Brazil

Following their participation in the 8th annual Fazza Para Archery World Ranking Event in Dubai, Team Canada’s Paralympic archers shared their insights and experiences from the competition.

Kyle Tremblay, who had secured a quota spot for the Paris Paralympic Games last fall, delivered a strong performance, finishing in the top 10. Reflecting on his achievement, Kyle expressed, “Although the outcome was not as good as I had hoped, it is still a major
improvement for my first event of a season after training in winter. Living in Canada provides major elemental challenges for a sport like archery and prevents us from being able to train in the same way and environment we compete in. This past winter I modified my winter training regimen and also trained in Colombia for a month to better prepare me for my first Paralympic season which resulted in my best first tournament finish of any season! This gives me confidence in my new training strategies and that my abilities will keep improving for the next events!”

Linda Price, acting as Coach/team manager for the event, highlighted the team’s overall progress and cohesion, particularly noting the first-time training for the recurve mixed team. While Canada did not secure an additional spot for the Paris Paralympics, Linda emphasized the confidence gained and the valuable lessons learned, setting the stage for a more competitive future. Shawn Matheson, another member of Team Canada, shared his experience of maintaining focus and composure during challenging moments, noting the unpredictable wind conditions in Dubai. Shawn acknowledged the need for improvement in reading wind patterns and expressed his determination to learn from this experience to better prepare for future competitions, including the upcoming event in Brazil.

Looking ahead, the team is optimistic about their future performances, with Linda expressing excitement for the opportunity to collaborate with Dr. Soha Mahmoud in Dubai. Kyle, Shawn, and the rest of Team Canada are eager to apply the lessons learned from Dubai, further honing their skills and strategies for future events, including the Paris Paralympic Games for Kyle.
