SANTIAGO, CL – As we come to the close of the 2022 international competition season, 17 Canadian archers are heading to Santiago, Chile for the Pan and Parapan Am Championships. The team consists of two barebow archers, four compound archers, three para archers, and eight recurve archers. 

The barebow archers representing Canada at this event are Angela Foley and Brooke Daigle. Foley most recently attended the Youth and Masters Pan Am Championships (YMPAC) in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she won a silver medal in the women’s 50+ barebow category. This will be Daigle’s first major international event, but she is the current Canadian Champion in the women’s barebow target category, a title she earned in Charlottetown this past summer. While the barebow division is not included in the Pan Am Games, this competition provides a great opportunity for the development of barebow target archery as events like this continue to grow. 

Tristan Moran, Austin Taylor, Jordan Adachi, and Cameron Palichuk make up the four-man compound squad heading to Chile. Moran has two previous World Championships medals – a silver in the team event at the 2017 World Archery Youth Championships (Rosario, AR) and a team bronze at the 2018 World Archery Indoor Championships (Yankton, US). Taylor is currently shooting in America on a scholarship and was Moran’s teammate when they won bronze in 2018, and won an individual silver medal himself at the 2019 World Archery Youth Championships. Adachi won team silver in 2017 with Moran and shot his way to a gold medal at the 2018 Pan Am Outdoor Championships. Palichuk, the youngest member on the team, most recently competed at the YMPAC and is consistently growing as a skilled archer.

The para team is made up of three compound archers – Kevin Evans, Chris Waterman, and Rob Cox. Waterman’s most recent international appearance was at the 2022 World Archery Para Championships in Dubai, but is hoping to continually build his international competition portfolio. Cox won gold in the men’s open compound category in the 2020 World Archery’s Online Cup of the Americas. In the early 2010s, he was a national team athlete and is now re-entering the world of competitive archery. Evans brings the largest depth of experience of the para team; he has competed in 3 Paralympic Games, 7 World Archery Para Championships (where he won an individual gold in 2009), 3 World Cup Stages (one team bronze in 2008), 5 Pan Am Outdoor Championships (3 silver in total), and one edition of the Parapan Am Games. All of the para archers will be attending a training camp in Toronto the week before the competition to prepare.

Representing Canada in recurve archery will be Andrew Azores, Brian Maxwell, Devaang Gupta, Eleanor Brug, Eric Peters, Natalee Chan, Stephanie Barrett, and Virginie Chénier. Azores most recently competed internationally at the Paris World Cup this past summer, and at the 2021 World Archery Championships last year. Maxwell won team gold at the most recent iteration of the Pan Am Games in Lima, and brings with him experience from many international competition appearances, including 2 World Archery Championships and 8 World Cup Stages. Gupta, one of the youngest members from the recurve group, attended his first World Cup stage earlier this year in Medellin. Brug will be attending her first international event in Santiago, but she was crowned Canadian Champion this past summer in the women’s recurve division. At the most recent Pan Am Games, Peters was able to walk with two medals – gold in the team event and an individual bronze. He also has a team bronze from the 2014 Youth Olympic Games; his experience is rounded out by appearances at many other international events. Chan is the youngest archer on the entire Canadian team, but that does not mean she is coming into the competition with no experience. She first shot on the international stage at the YMPAC in Halifax earlier this year. Barrett is the sole Olympian on this team; she competed in Tokyo last year, even though she only picked up the bow for the first time in 2016. With 1 World Championships appearance, 6 at World Cups, and 1 at Pan Am Games, she brings a lot of experience with her. Chénier has appeared in many World Championships, multiple World Cup stages, and 2 Pan Am Games; thus she will look to shoot strong in Santiago.

This serves as an important competition heading into the 2023 season. The Pan and Parapan Am Championships, which pull in archers from North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean, provides the greatest opportunity and the largest number of spots available for the 2023 Pan and Parapan Am Games, also taking place in Santiago, Chile. Those Games will then serve as an important qualifier for the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics in Paris, France.
