International Event Opportunities

While Archery Canada may select and nominate athletes and teams to World Championships, World Cups and more, there are often international event opportunities with open event registration. These events can be a great way to gain international competition experience, see the world, make new friends and take your skills to the next level. International competition offers Canadian archers exposure to the world-archery community, opportunities to benchmark performance against top athletes globally, gain experience under pressure, and represent Canada on the world stage. Whether you aim for major championships (World Cups, World Championships, Youth Championships, etc.) or open events, there are pathways to suit different levels. The following will help you to understand these opportunities.

Eligibility & General Requirements

To participate in World Archery(WA) and WA Member Association international events, archers must meet the following general eligibility requirements:

  • Be a current registrant with Archery Canada in good standing.
  • Have a valid passport. (Note: ensure the passport remains valid at least six months beyond the end of the event.)
  • Meet any age requirements set by Archery Canada or World Archery, as applicable.
  • Adhere to the official rules set by World Archery.
  • Follow anti-doping, safety, and insurance protocols — As required by Archery Canada and World Archery.
  • For some events, athletes may need to meet minimum performance or qualification standards as defined in the relevant selection criteria or by the event host.
Types of International Participation

Representing Team Canada (Nominated)

For major competitions (World Championships, World Cups, Continental Games, etc.), Archery Canada may select and nominate athletes, based on published selection procedures and performance criteria. Selected athletes must sign the official Athlete Agreement.

Self-Funded / Open-Entry International Events

For archers seeking extra international exposure, participation in open-entry events (World Archery Open WAREOS events, continental competitions, invitationals, “open” tournaments) or Member Association events (such as USA Archery JOAD competitions,) is an option. Current Archery Canada registrants may register for Open Registration events on World Archery’s OPEN WAREOS or directly through the Local Organizing Committee (LOC).

In such cases, archers:

  • Register individually (through the local Organizing Committee / World Archery entry system).
  • Must ensure their paperwork, travel documents, and World Archery compliance are in order (passport validity, adherence to rules, doping control where applicable per AC / World Archery regulations).
  • Are responsible for their own costs (travel, accommodation, registration fees, insurance, equipment transport).

This route offers flexibility and an opportunity for developing athletes to test themselves without needing to go through the full national-team selection process.
