Canadian Archers Advance After Strong Performances at World Archery Field Championships in Lac la Biche

Our Canadian archers have completed the first two days of qualifications at the 2024 World Archery Field Championships, facing off against athletes from 28 countries in senior and U21 categories across recurve, compound, and barebow disciplines.

In Barebow Men, Jovica Djukic (SK) posted the second-highest score in the marked competition, securing 7th place. He will face Michael Fisher of Australia in tomorrow’s elimination rounds. Lisa Yuen placed 16th and will compete against Italy’s Cinzia Noziglia.

For Compound, Andrew Fagan (ON) placed 10th and advances to face Eli Hughes (USA) in the 1/8 round. Andrea Wiens (16th) will meet Paige Pearce (USA) in Women’s Compound eliminations. In U21 Compound Men, 2022 World Champion Dustin Watson (ON)  placed 13th, Damon Polowaniuk (AB), and Trevor Hoy (ON) all move on to the 1/8 round. Anya Pinel led Canadian women in U21 Compound, placing 7th, and will face teammate Taylor Klimchuk (MB) who was 10th, while Grace Trevana (SK), in 9th, advances to face Andreea Albu of Romania.

In Recurve Women, Eleanor Brug (BC) placed 15th and will face Roberta Di Francesco (ITA). Both of Canada’s U21 Recurve Women, Audrey Khan Arevalo (ON) who was 6th and Amelia Gagne (ON) who was 8th, advance to elimination rounds, with Audrey set to meet Slovakia’s Lea Málková and Amelia facing Bela Kupkova (CZE).

The Championships also feature a Team competition in which the disciplines are combined. Canada will advance in the Men’s team with Jovica Djukic, Andrew Fagan and the Women’s team of Eleanor Brug, Andrea Wiens, and Lisa Yuen. Both teams will meet up against the USA in the ¼ eliminations. In the Compound U21 Mixed Team event, Dutin Watson and Anya Pinel will advance to compete against Italy in the semi final.

Team coach, Sean McKenty was pleased with the day. “I feel this is a great result for Canada, with many new archers coming very close to the cut line shows if we invest more in Field archery we can compete on the World stage.”

Stay tuned for more updates as Team Canada continues to pursue top positions in the elimination rounds.
