ROSARIO, ARGENTINA – 18 archers represented Canada from October 2 to 8, 2017 at the World Archery Youth Championship in Rosario, Argentina. Nine archers competed in junior categories and nine in cadet categories, participating in both the individual and team events. The 2017 Youth Canadian Team posted its best results ever for a Youth World Championship.

In the team events, Tristan Moran (Saskatchewan), Cole Beres (Alberta) and Jordan Adachi (British Columbia) made it to the Junior Compound Gold Medal match, where they lost a tough fight to the team from Mexico, ultimately finishing with a Silver medal. Our compound cadet men’s team composed of three archers from Winnipeg, Austin Taylor, Brady Klassen and Robbie Comberbach, finished fourth narrowly missing out on a podium opportunity.

In the women’s compound cadet category, Alexandra Paquette (Quebec) also returns to Canada with a silver medal after defeating archers from the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Great Britain and Iran before losing to Great Britain. In the men’s compound cadet category, Robbie Comberbach finished sixth after making life very difficult for Ethan Merril (USA) who was the third ranked archer going in to eliminations.

In the men’s recurve division, cadet Benjamen Lee (Ontario) finished in fifth place after losing a well fought match to Yong from Korea. National Recurve Coach, Shawn Riggs said “what an absolutely amazing result, Ben was able to maintain his composure against tough opponents, over three successive days of match play. This is a very clear display of what can be accomplished when athletes incorporate sports psychology into their training at an early stage. Most of our recurve competitors at this event have been active participants in our TOPS and NextGen programming, so I’m quite excited to see them progressing this far in the short time that we’ve been delivering these programs.” A number of the recurve archers performed well despite the challenging conditions. Both Hayden Edwards and Remi Gervais won their first round matches, and Joel Vezina-Boucher shot one of his highest 720s of the season.

Marc Gagnon, Youth Program Coordinator, added, “these 18 young archers competed under challenging conditions this week; we had limited practice, a wet field and strong winds. They deserve a great deal of credit for the results they’ve achieved and it’s great to see our team of young athletes achieve this best ever result.
