Canada concludes Para Pan American Championships with Gold, Silver, Bronze and Three Lima 2027 Quota Spots

LIMA, Peru – Canada’s para archery team delivered a landmark performance at the 2026 Para Pan American Championships, returning home with a gold medal, silver medal, bronze medal, and three qualification quota spots for the Lima 2027 Parapan American Games. Canada’s results secured places in all three men’s para categories contested by the team: Men W1, Para Recurve Men, and Para Compound Men.

The championships concluded on a high note Sunday as Spencer Arnold of British Columbia captured the gold medal in Men W1, defeating reigning Paralympic champion Jason Tabansky of the United States in the championship final. Arnold’s victory capped an outstanding event that also saw him team with Quebec’s Dan Comeau to earn a silver medal in the W1 Men Doubles competition.

Comeau added to Canada’s medal haul earlier in the week with a bronze medal in Men W1, an important achievement in his first major championship since moving into the W1 classification.

“It was an amazing experience shooting with all of these world-class archers,” said Arnold. “I am so grateful to be here showing what I am capable of. I can’t wait for the next one. Go Canada!”

The Canadian team’s success extended well beyond the podium.

“Earning three quota spots for the Parapan American Games is a tremendous achievement for our archery program and a reflection of the hard work our athletes and coaches have put in,” said Kylah Cawley, High Performance Manager. “Dan’s third-place finish in the W1 division was a proud moment for our team, and Spencer’s gold medal performance to close out the championships is a tremendous accomplishment. These results demonstrate the growth and strength of our para program and position us well as we look ahead to Lima 2027.”

Canada also received strong performances throughout the championships from its para team:

Para Recurve Men

  • Shawn Matheson (ON) – 9th
  • Jean François Lavergne (QC) – 16th

Para Compound Men

  • Kyle Tremblay (ON) – 7th
  • Chris Waterman (MB) – 13th

Those performances secured Canada’s qualification spots in Para Recurve Men, Para Compound Men, and Men W1 for the Lima 2027 Parapan American Games.

With three medals, three quota spots, and a gold-medal performance to close the event, Canada’s para archery team leaves Lima with significant momentum as preparations begin for the next Parapan American Games cycle.
