Compound archers round out team heading to Santiago

SANTIAGO, CL – Archery Canada is happy to announce the Canadian team heading to the Pan Am Championships in Santiago, Chile to compete in Compound target archery, with four athletes attending.

The compound team was selected in accordance with the Selection addendum, nominating the highest-ranking available members of the 2022 national team and 2023 compound squad ranking list:

Tristan Moran (SK)
Austin Taylor (MB)
Cameron Palichuk (AB)
Jordan Adachi (BC)

Duncan Crawford will be attending as the team’s coach.

The team brings a large amount of experience with them. Tristan Moran was the highest qualifying archer out of the group and brings international experience with him, having won two medals at previous World Championships. He has a silver in the team event at the 2017 World Archery Youth Championships in Rosario, as well as a bronze team medal at the 2018 World Archery Indoor Championships in Yankton. Austin Taylor, who is currently shooting in the States on a scholarship, won an individual silver medal at the 2019 World Archery Youth Championships in Madrid and was on the team with Moran that earned a bronze medal in 2018. Cameron Palichuk is the youngest member on the team; he most recently competed at the 2022 Youth and Masters Pan Am Championships in Halifax and has been consistently proving himself as one to watch. Jordan Adachi was on the 2017 silver medalling team with Moran, and has an individual gold medal to his name from the 2018 Pan Am Outdoor Championships in Medellin.

The Pan American Championships is an important competition for compound archers as it offers the greatest opportunity to qualify positions for the 2023 Pan American Games. We are very pleased to field a full team for the men, but unfortunately, the female athletes that qualified for these Championships had to make the decision to decline the opportunity. While the Technical Leadership team for the program and the organization is disappointed that there will be no Canadian female compound archers at the event, it highlights the need to bolster the strength and depth on the women’s side of the compound pool. Under the leadership of the compound technical team, the focus will turn to developing female compound archers in Canada. Canada has a history of success in Compound target archery and we have a talented pool of youth archers coming up in the program. The program will prioritize available funding for development opportunities, with current plans to host a national pre-season training camp for the female compound squad, most likely taking place in spring 2023.

The Pan American Championships pulls together archers from North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean, and given its importance in awarding quota positions for the 2023 Pan Am Games, it will be a great competition to follow.
