Six Canadian archers to compete at the 2025 South American Open
OTTAWA, ON – Six Recurve archers will be heading to Medellin, to compete in the upcoming South American Open to kick off their 2025 competitive season. The South American Open consists of both the South American Championships and a World Ranking event competition, which will be the athletes’ first official opportunity this season to earn the new Minimum Qualification Scores, to be considered eligible to participate in the 2026 World Cups.
This event was identified as the first major key event for the 2025 season for the Recurve National Team. With a pivot in the Archery Canada High Performance strategy, focusing on athlete and coach development through to Brisbane 2032, the South American Open, was chosen as a great development opportunity, as the Open Registration component gives all attending National Team athletes an opportunity to participate in match play.
The athletes competing in Medellin are:
Men Recurve 21+
- Brian Maxwell (Vancouver, BC)
- Kurtis Ng (Toronto, ON)
- Reece Wilson-Poyton (St. Catherines, ON)
- Brandon Xuereb (Laval, QC)
Women Recurve 21+
- Virginie Chenier (Laval, QC)
- Janna Hawash (Cambridge, ON)
The team will be supported by Linda Price (Mission, BC) and Janice Clark (Ottawa, ON). Price, who is the Head Coach for the Archery Canada Paralympic Team, is stepping in as the interim National Coach Designate to support the Recurve teams, following Ron van der Hoff’s departure from Archery Canada in early April 2025.
Archery Canada is looking forward to watching these athletes compete in Colombia and representing Canada well.
