Archery Canada names five Para Compound athletes to compete at the 2019 Para World Championships, in s’-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands
OTTAWA, ON – Archery Canada has officially named five Para Compound Archers to represent Canada, at the Para World Championships in s’-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, from June 2nd-9th 2019.
Competing in the Men’s Compound open, will be team veteran & Paralympian, Kevin Evans, of Jaffray BC, as well as Kyle Tremblay, Deep River ON, and Rhys Leidal, of Cranbrook BC. Paralympian Karen Van Nest of Bruce Peninsula ON, will lead the women's team, along with Shelby Smith, of Lethbridge, Alberta. This will be Smith and Leidal’s first Para World Championship appearance.
“The team has been busy preparing for this event for the last 12 months,” said Archery Canada’s Paralympic Head Coach, Duncan Crawford. “Since Nove Mesto, Czech Republic (in June of 2018), we've had a very clear and defined goal – to win Paralympic Quota spots at the 2019 World Championships. In that time, the program has seen significant gains and strong performances from all of our athletes. Kevin Evans, Karen Van Nest, and Kyle Tremblay bring great potential and a strong history of success, while rookies Rhys Leidal and Shelby Smith are shooting well and looking for a major breakthrough.”
Support staff include Duncan Crawford (Covehead, PE) as Head Coach and Ryan Van Berkel (Winnipeg, MB) as Para Coordinator. All athletes will be competing individually and Canada will also field a Compound Mixed Team and a Men's Compound Team. Our goal is to earn several individual quota spots and a Mixed Team spot for the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020.
