1. Karen Van Nest brings home the silver medal at the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games

At the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, four-time Paralympian, Karen Van Nest of Wiarton, Ontario took to the podium at the University of Toronto Varsity Stadium. Van Nest, making her Parapan Am debut, brought home the silver medal in the women’s open compound competition.

Paralympian Van Nest began her quest for silver by being pre-seeded through to the semi-final round. In the semi’s, Van Nest faced Martha Chavez of the U.S.A, taking the match with a score of 140-121. In the gold medal match, Van Nest met Brazilian Jane Karla Gogel, who had previously eliminated her teammate Helba Aparecida Borges. Gogel took the match with a score of 140-132. Van Nest was Canada’s only female entry in the women’s archery competition.

In men’s open compound, Kevin Evans of Jaffray, British Columbia finished just off the podium, falling to Ben Thompson of the U.S.A in the bronze medal match, 141-138. Evans road to his fourth place finish started with a match-up against Argentinian Frederico Luis Paolorossi, where Evans took the match by one point, 137-136, progressing him to the quarterfinals. In the quarters, Evans faced-off against Brazilian Andrey Castro, winning the match 140-136. In the semi-finals against the eventual gold medalist Evans fell to American Andre Shelby 143-140, placing him in the battle for bronze.

The gold medal match in men’s open compound was a U.S.A. showdown with team mates Matt Stutzman and Andre Shelby facing each other. Shelby took home the gold medal.

Joining Evans in the men’s open compound competition was Bob Hudson of Leoville, Saskatchewan, silver medalist at the 2011 Pan Am Games and 2012 Paralympian, as well as five-time Paralympian Alec Denys of Douro-Dummer, Ontario. Both men took to competition in the quarter final round with Hudson facing elimination from the eventual silver medalist Matt Stutzman, 144-132. Denys met American Ben Thompson in the quarterfinal round, where Thompson took the match 142-135.

The Canadian team is now preparing for the Para-Archery World Championships, to take place in Donaueschingen, Germany August 23rd-August 30th. Listed below are the athletes and staff that comprised the National Team for the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games. The Parapan American Games takes place every four years.

2. Canada’s Compound Men Bring Home Team Silver Medal at 2015 World Championships

In Copenhagen, the men’s Canadian compound team, consisting of Dietmar Trillus (ON), Christopher Perkins (ON) and Kevin Tataryn (MB) brought home the silver medal after facing a strong Iranian team in the gold medal match on Saturday, August 1st. It was not an easy road to the final with the men’s team facing the host country Denmark in the semi-finals, but prevailing with a four point win, 231-227. After taking an early two point lead on the Iranians in the gold medal match, the match finished in a tie at 226 points. In the tie break, Iran edged out the Canadian team by shooting three 10’s, beating out Canada’s two 10’s and a 9

In individual competition, the Canadian male compound archery athletes put on quite a strong show. After qualifying in 6thplace, Kevin Tataryn was pre-seeded in the round of 32 where he faced Nelson Torres of Venezuela and took the match 148-144. Tataryn then faced teammate Christopher Perkins in the round of sixteen, before falling to the eventual silver medalist Rajat Chauhan of India 146-143. Tataryn finished the tournament in a very credible tie for 5th place. Chris Perkins qualified in 11thplace and began his elimination rounds by defeating Andrey Lobanov of Kazakhstan 144-139. Perkins continued to advance until the round of 16 where he lost by one point to fellow teammate Kevin Tataryn, 147-146 finishing in 9th place overall. Rounding up the men’s’ individual competition, the veteran, Dietmar Trillus, advanced to the third round, where he finished the match against Camilo Andres Cardona of Columbia, in a tie 143-143. In the tie break, both archers shoot one arrow and the closest to the middle wins the match. Both archers shot a ten, but the Colombian won the match on the measurement

In women’s compound, this world championship marked Katie Roth’s first World Championship appearance. In her first round Roth faced Laura Longo of Italy and won the match 136-131. Moving to the second round, Roth faced a tough opponent in Sakineh Ghasempour of Iran. Ghasempour took the match 141-129. Teammates, Fiona McClean and Tricia Oshiro both faced early elimination in the first round. McClean was eliminated by one point by Sandrine Vandionant of France, 137-136, and Oshiro lost to Ivana Buden of Croatia, 136-134.

In the recurve competition, Olympic quota spots for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games were up for grabs, with Crispin Duenas securing one spot for Canada in the individual men’s recurve competition. Crispin Duenas, Jay Lyon, & Patrick Rivest-Bunster, qualified in 13thplace in the men’s recurve team competition but in their first match, they faced a tough opponent in team USA, who won the match 6-2 eliminating the Canadians. Pan Am bronze medalist, Jay Lyon, started the individual elimination round by defeating Jayanta Talukadar of India 6-2. In the second round, Lyon was eliminated by Dai Xiaoxiang of China, 7-3. Teammate Patrick Rivest-Bunster started the elimination rounds with an upset win over Yu Xing of China, 7-3, before being eliminated in the second round by Guillermo Angular Gimpel of Chile, 6-4. Crispin Duenas won his first two matches and then upset Dan Olaru of Romania in the third round 6-2, a result that was good enough to earn an Olympic quota spot for Canada. Duenas then fell to the eventual gold medalist Korean Kim Woojin 6-0.

On the women’s side, Canada was represented by Pan Am athletes Georcy-Stéphanie Thiffeault Picard, Virginie Chénier and Kateri Vrakking. Shooting in difficult conditions, all three women put up a strong fight. In the first elimination round Thiffeault Picard faced a tough opponent in Kawanaka Kaori of Japan. Kaori took the match 6-0. Teammate Chénier fell to Carina Rosenvinge of Denmark in the first round 7-3. Rounding out the women’s competition, Kateri Vrakking took on Naomi Folkard of Great Britain, but did not advance to the second round, with Folkard winning the match 7-3.

3. Jay Lyon Brings Home Bronze Medal at Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games

With athletes competing from 14 different countries, Jay Lyon of Winnipeg, Manitoba, brought home the bronze medal in front of a packed University of Toronto Varsity Stadium at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games. Lyon, who is a three-time Pan Am Games athlete, won silver in the team event at the 2007 Pan Am Games and finished 10th at the 2008 Olympic Games and won silver at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

In Toronto, Lyon won his first-ever individual Pan American Games medal. Lyon faced a string of tough opponents, including fellow teammate Patrick Rivest-Bunster as well as Olympian and gold medalist at the 2011 Pan Am Games Brady Ellison of the USA. Facing Zach Garrett of the USA, Lyon took the bronze medal match in three straight sets (6 – 0), with the last set having shot three 10’s for a perfect score of 30.

The gold medal match was a battle between the USA’s Brady Ellison and Mexico’s Luis Alvarez, with Alvarez taking the top spot after five sets.

Joining Lyon in the men’s competition was Crispin Duenas of Toronto, silver medalist at the 2011 Pan Am Games, a two-time Olympian, and 2013 World Championship bronze medalist. Two-time Pan Am athlete, Patrick Rivest-Bunster of Montréal rounded out the Canadian men’s team. Both men faced elimination in the early rounds, with Rivest-Bunster facing elimination from competition against Lyon.

On the women’s side, Canada was well represented by three-time Pan Am athlete Kateri Vrakking of Etobicoke, Ontario and first-time Pan Am athletes Georcy-Stéphanie Thiffeault Picard of Montréal and Virginie Chénier of Laval, Quebec. Shooting in front of a hometown crowd, both Vrakking and Thiffeault Picard finished in a tie for ninth after progressing to the round of eight. Chénier was eliminated by teammate Thiffeault Picard in the first round.

In team competition, both the men’s and women’s teams finished the competition in 6th place. The women’s team faced a tough opponent from Columbia, who went on to win the gold. The men lost to the Brazilians, the eventual bronze medalists.

The Toronto 2015 Pan American Games were the third consecutive Pan Am Games where Canada has stood on the podium, with Duenas winning the individual silver medal in 2011 in Guadalajara, Mexico. At the 2007 Pan Am Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil the Canadian men’s and women’s teams both brought home the silver medal, with Lyon, Duenas, and Vrakking all members of the 2007 winning teams.

4. Archery Canada Annual Awards:

2015 Recipients Archery Canada’s annual awards were awarded at the 2015 Annual General Meeting held in Winnipeg on August 6th. The 2015 recipients are as follows:

D.M. Lovo Award for Outstanding Contribution to Archery in Canada:

BRUCE SAVAGE Bruce Savage of Caledon, Ontario, is this year’s recipient of the D.M. Lovo Award for Outstanding Contribution to Archery in Canada. Bruce is the recipient of this prestigious award for his outstanding contribution and long-time commitment to the development and delivery of Archery Canada’s National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).

Bruce is Chair of Archery Canada’s Coaching Certification Committee and as such has played a pivotal leadership role in the transition to and ongoing development and recent completion of the Competition Introduction and Competition Development contexts of Archery Canada’s new NCCP. Bruce has been the lead in the development of the course resource materials and has facilitated a number of successful pilot courses.

In addition to his volunteer duties as Chair of the Coaching Certification Committee, Bruce is a very active course facilitator for beginner and intermediate instructor training workshops and Competition Introduction coach training workshops in Ontario. In fact Bruce’s teaching and coaching expertise has seen Bruce recruited to teach these same courses at various clubs throughout Canada.

Bruce’s knowledge and expertise in coaching and athlete development has also proven of much benefit to Archery Canada’s work on the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) Model and the follow-up LTAD Competition Model. Bruce’s leadership in these areas has been invaluable. A retired high school teacher, Bruce continues to be an active coach of high performance and recreational archers with his home club, The Archers of Caledon.

Bruce was nominated by the Archery Canada High Performance Committee.

Greg Durward Volunteer of the Year Award Winner – RENE & PAULINE SCHAUB

Rene and Pauline Schaub are the 2015 recipients of the Greg Durward Volunteer of the Year Award for their outstanding planning, organization, and leadership in hosting and staging a highly successful 2014 Canadian Outdoor Archery Championships in La La Biche, Alberta. Both Rene and Pauline lead by example and clearly served as an inspiration to their strong team of volunteers. The community support and sponsorship commitment that they rallied around the hosting of the Canadian Championships was unparalleled.

In addition to their outstanding work noted above, Rene and Pauline are committed and energetic volunteers at the club and provincial levels. Rene is Past President of Archery Alberta.

Dorothy Lidstone Female Athlete of the Year Award Winner – GEORCY-STÉPHANIE THIFFEAULT PICARD

Georcy-Stéphanie Thiffeault Picard is this year’s recipient of the Dorothy Lidstone Female Athlete of the Year Award for her very successful 2014 season on the national and international stage. Georcy was crowned the 2014 Canadian Champion and placed 17th at the Pan American Archery Championship in Argentina last Fall. Georcy is the #1 ranked female archery athlete in Canada and is in the gold squad. She set a new Canadian record for the 720 round.

Georcy was nominated by the Archery Canada High Performance Committee.

Frank Jones Male Athlete of the Year Award Winner – CRISPIN DUENAS

Crispin Duenas is this year’s recipient of the Frank Jones Male Athlete of the Year Award for his very successful 2014 season on the national and international stage. Crispin’s scores and results were consistent throughout the 2014 season. He is the #1 ranked male archery athlete in Canada and was the only gold squad male archer in 2014. Crispin was ranked 10th in the world in 2014 (up from 13th in 2013).

Crispin was nominated by the Archery Canada High Performance Committee.

Female Junior Athlete of the Year Award Winner – BRITTANY JOHNSON

Brittany Johnson is again this year the recipient of the Female Junior Athlete of the Year Award. Brittany’s success in 2014 built on that of 2013. Brittany won this award last year for finishing 8th at the 2013 World Youth Championship. At the 2014 Canadian Outdoor Target Championship, as a junior, Brittany finished 2nd in the Women’s Open Compound behind international veteran Ashley Wallace. In the process Brittany set two Canadian Junior Women’s records, including a record in the 720 round where she shot a score of 683.

Brittany was nominated by the Archery Canada High Performance Committee.

Tom Mack Junior Male Athlete of the Year Award Winner – TYLER MURPHY & CHRISTOPHER GOLDEN

Tyler Murphy and Christopher Golden of New Brunswick are co-winners of this year’s Tom Mack Junior Male Athlete of the Year Award. Both young compound archery athletes had a strong 2014 indoor and Outdoor season.

Tyler stood atop the podium at the 2014 Canadian Outdoor Target Championship in the combined Cadet and Master Men category. In the process Tyler set a Canadian Cadet Men’s record. Tyler was the 2014 recipient of this same award when he shared it with his teammates Hunter McGinnis and Logan Kupchanko for winning the silver medal in the Cadet Compound category at the 2013 World Youth Championship.

In October 2014, Christopher competed as a Junior at the Pan American Archery Championship in Rosario, Argentina where he brought home the bronze medal. This international success built on Christopher’s experience gained as a member of the Canadian Youth Team that competed at the 2011 and 2013 World Archery Youth Championship. Christopher has been competing in the compound division nationally in indoor and outdoor archery since he was 12 years old. He has proven to be an excellent role model for Canada’s younger archers by sharing his technical knowledge and experience and demonstrating excellent sportsmanship to his fellow competitors.

Tyler and Christopher were selected by the Archery Canada Board of Directors.

Hank Wiseman Coach of the Year Award Winner – TRINA SNOOKS

Trina Snooks is this year’s recipient of the Hank Wiseman Coach of the Year Award. Trina is personal coach to Christopher Golden and Tyler Murphy, co-winners of this year’s Tom Mack Junior Male Athlete of the Year Award.

Trina is a committed coach with aspirations to one day become a Head National Team Coach. Trina has served as a coach for Archery Canada’s Youth Team that competed at the 2011, 2013 and 2015 World Youth Championships. Trina was New Brunswick’s Canada Winter Games Coach in 2011 and 2015. In addition, she is a very active club level coach where she serves as volunteer Head Coach at her home club in Memramcook, NB. In terms of NCCP certification, Trina is a certified Beginner and Intermediate Archery Instructor and is also certified at the Introduction to Competition and Competition Development levels. She has also attended numerous coaching professional development conferences. Trina ‘practices what she preaches’ in creating a team atmosphere and a positive attitude.

Trina has been actively involved in the development, promotion and implementation of Archery Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model at the national, provincial and club levels. Since 2008 Trina has been the LTAD ‘champion’ for Archery New Brunswick. Additionally, Trina recently served as Archery Canada’s volunteer LTAD Coordinator. She continues to contribute to Archery Canada’s LTAD planning and initiatives.

Trina was nominated by Archery New Brunswick.

Sylvio Beauregard Judge of the Year Award Winner – RANDALL JONES

Randall Jones is this year’s recipient of the Sylvio Beauregard Judge of the Year Award. Randall is a seasoned and highly respected judge. Throughout his volunteer work as a judge, Randall has proven to be a committed, knowledgeable and skilled official and has always demonstrated professionalism.

In 2010, Randall was appointed an International Judge by World Archery. Since that time Randall has officiated at numerous World Archery events and international multi-sport games. As well, throughout this time he has continued his commitment to officiate at local, provincial and national tournaments. Randall’s commitment to officiating remains as strong as ever and so too does his passion and commitment to furthering the development of judging in Canada. This marks the second time that Randall has been awarded the Sylvio Beauregard Judge of the Year Award (1st time in 2010).

Randall was nominated by the Archery Canada High Performance Committee.

5. The WW Gunter Memorial Bursary: 2015 Recipient

The WW Gunter Memorial Bursary is awarded annually to a Canadian Archer between the ages of 15 and 20, who has competed or will be competing for Canada at a World Championship or international archery competition such as the Youth World Championships or Youth Olympic Games, and who is planning to continue their education at the post-secondary level. The archer must conduct themselves in a manner that is a credit to their sport, their country and always maintain a sense of dignity and sportsmanship in victory and defeat. Applications are reviewed by a committee of the Gunter Family.

The 2015 recipient of the WW Gunter Memorial Award is Tyler Murphy of Fredericton, New Brunswick. Tyler was the 2014 recipient of the Junior Male Athlete of the Year Award when he shared it with his teammates Hunter McGinnis and Logan Kupchanko for winning the silver medal in the Cadet Compound category at the 2013 World Youth Championship. Tyler was also a member of the 2015 Youth National Team that represented Canada at the 2015 World Youth Championship in Yankton, South Dakota, USA.
