Canada’s Recurve Archers Aim for Olympic Quotas at Pan Am Championships

Ottawa, ON – With the outdoor season and Olympic year fast approaching, Canada’s Recurve athletes are gearing up for their first competition of the season, and another chance to earn further quota spots for the Paris Olympic Games at the Pan Am Championships, being held in Medellin Colombia from April 7th to April 14th.

The event will kick off with the Individual Continental Qualifier for the Paris Olympic Games, in which only our women’s team is eligible to compete in. The women’s team will consist of:

  • Virginie Chenier, Laval, QC
  • Stephanie Barrett, Mississaugua, ON
  • Kristine Esebua, York, ON

Following this qualification event, both the Men’s team and Women’s teams will have a chance to earn team quota spots through the Championships. The men’s team joining the womens in Colombia will consist of:

  • Eric Peters, Kitchener, ON
  • Crispin Duenas, Scarborough, ON
  • Devaang Gupta, Toronto, ON

For the Pan Am Championship portion of the event, Canada can field up to 4 athletes per category. Further evaluation is being completed with the potential to add a fourth archer by the Final Entry deadline of March 19th 2024. Canada can only enter (3) women in the individual qualification tournament.

The Canadian Archery team will be supported by National Coach Advisor, Ron van der Hoff, who has been leading the Recurve Program since January 2023 following Shawn Riggs departure as the National Coach. Ron will be supported by Linda Price of British Columbia, who had worked with Shawn Riggs in the past and is currently working extensively with Archery Canada’s Para program. Joining Ron and Linda will be Sjef van den Berg. Sjef, a former athlete during Ron Van der Hoffs decade long tenure with the Netherlands team, has the ability to see technical details in other archers’ form, and translate any changes to how that archer will feel. He is one of the most gifted archers in the world when it comes to the feel of the shot, and is an asset in helping the Canadian team at this event.

The Recurve team will not be the only Canadian team in competition at this event. Stay tuned for more information on the Compound and Barebow teams!
