Canadian National Team Archery Mariessa Pinto Picks Up Silver in the Online Cup of the Americas

After a strong performance in the semifinals against Argentinian Florencia Leithold, Canadian National Recurve Team member Mariessa Pinto of British Columbia falls to Maira Sepúlveda of Columbia in the Gold medal match this afternoon. The archery community across Canada cheered her on via Facebook Live. Pinto was the second Canadian to make it through to the Finals in the Online Cup of the Americas after Rob Cox of Manitoba won Gold in the Men’s Open Compound category last month.

Despite a strong showing, Pinto fell 7-1 against the Columbian in a nerve-wracking match for both archers who are unaccustomed to this new virtual format.

Pinto had inspiring words for archers across the world in the midst of a global pandemic. “Keep shooting and doing everything you can,” she said, “things will come together eventually.”

“What an exciting week it has been for our Women’s program,” said Canadian Team National Coach Shawn Riggs, “Monday’s match between the two Canadians was a great start, and Pinto’s second place is a solid finish.  Both archers took the competition as an opportunity to test what they had been working on throughout the season, which was important to see.  In a season with little opportunity for competition, this was a novel way to give archers a chance to test themselves.”

With the Women’s Recurve round complete, one more Canadian will compete in the Online Cup of the Americas elimination round.
