Canadian Outdoor Championships a huge success in Prince Albert

OTTAWA (Archery Canada) – The country’s top archers gathered in Prince Albert, Sask., this past week for Archery Canada’s 2019 Canadian Outdoor Field and Target Archery Championships.

Complete Championship Results: Prince Albert 2019

The action kicked off last Wednesday with the field competition, followed by the annual Fred Usher Memorial Cup team tournament on Thursday, the two-day target championships on Friday and Saturday, and last but not least, the Canadian Open on Sunday.

All these events were preceded by the 2019 Canadian Outdoor 3D Archery Championships, also hosted by the Timberland Bowbenders Archery Club, from Aug. 3-7.

An impressive 11 archers accomplished the feat of being crowned national champions in both Field and Target competition.

In women’s action, double winners included Kristen Arsenault from Miscouche Archery Club (compound cadet), Pat Wiun from Springbrook Archers Archery Club (compound master), Joelle Thurow from Cariboo Archers (compound cub) and Madelynn Holkema from Capital Region Archery (compound pre-cub).

Their performance was matched on the men’s side by Austin Taylor from Team Heartland (compound junior), Keegan Crawford from Cass’ Creek Archery Club (compound pre-cub), Mark Shields from Victoria Bowmen (barebow junior), Brandon Xuereb from the Ontario Association of Archers (recurve), Scott Gordon from Thunderhead (recurve master), Liam Bennett from Silvertip Archers (recurve cub) and Spencer Freeze from Cass’ Creek Archery Club (recurve pre-cub).

A complete list of individual gold medallists from the 2019 Canadian Outdoor Field and Target Championships is included below.

Arsenault completed a rare “hat-trick” by also capturing gold in the Canadian Open head-to-head tournament.

The Wellington, P.E.I native prevailed in women’s cadet-master compound, with Natasha Shpak of Winnipeg and Tasjia Boyle of Regina taking silver and bronze, respectively.

Other gold medallists on the women’s side were Karen Van Nest of South Bruce Peninsula, Ont. (compound junior-senior), Mia Renaud of Quebec City (recurve cadet-master) and Rymma Garamova of Winnipeg (recurve senior-junior).

In men’s competition, Brandon Petersen of Winnipeg (compound junior-senior), Jacob Bourassa of Regina (compound cadet-master), Bradley Fulsang of Selwyn, Ont. (recurve junior-senior) and Benjamen Lee of Kitchener, Ont. (recurve cadet-master) made up the winners’ circle.

Fred Usher Memorial Cup

In the annual team tournament between provinces and territories, Manitoba captured its third straight Fred Usher Memorial Cup title thanks to a gold-medal win over Quebec. Ontario defeated the Atlantic representatives to claim bronze.

In the semifinal round, the repeat champions edged Ontario, while Quebec beat Atlantic.

Quarter-final results included Manitoba over Alberta, Ontario ousting Saskatchewan, Quebec eliminating British Columbia, and the Atlantic squad taking down Prince Edward Island.
